Darcie Brown’s WBBL | 12 Hopes End as Back Injury Setback Deepens

Darcie Brown is set to miss the entirety of the 2026 season after suffering a recurring back injury in an almighty blow to her Adelaide Strikers franchise and Australia’s pace-bowling plans.

Australian fast bowler Darcie Brown will be sidelined for WBBL | 12 after being unable to adequately recover from a disc injury in her back. After resting and recovering from the effects of her Australia A tour of India, she was hopeful of returning to action during the tournament.

However, Cricket Australia confirmed Brown’s injury had not progressed sufficiently to allow her to train safely. Consequently, she will miss the upcoming WBBL season, which lasts through to 5 December 2026.

Darcie Brown’s Back Injury Forces WBBL Withdrawal

After returning from playing a handful of T20 and one-day matches for Australia A in India, Brown was diagnosed with an injury to her back disc. The injury had also forced her to miss the ODI series against Bangladesh in Australia.

The medical staff initially expected that a spell of lowered physical workload would see the right-arm quick recover in time to contribute during the WBBL’s second half. But her recovery has not gone to plan, and she is ruled out of returning to play full-strength ahead of the end of the tournament.

It means the Adelaide Strikers will start their campaign without one of their key pace-bowling options. The absence of Brown is particularly significant, as the team aims to contend for a spot in the tournament finals.

Brown’s Performance on Australia A Tour of India

Even after she missed the opportunity to become a major injury setback, Brown showed more encouraging signs on her recent A tour of India. She played in two T20s, taking one for 31 in her only match and recording a 0 for 27.

She also made an outstanding performance in the second one-day coming up, taking another three wickets for 39 runs from eight overs. That performance provided a boost in confidence as she sought to build her case for a recall to the senior national team of Australia.

Brown’s efforts to reclaim her position in the national setup had also come as she missed out on Australia’s T20 World Cup squad earlier in 2026. Another solid WBBL season would have allowed her to put her form and fitness on display again.

Adelaide Strikers Face a Major Bowling Challenge

The Adelaide Strikers have a key hole to fill in their fast-bowling line-up with the departure of Brown, who has not played for England since last October. Megan Schutt and Tahlia McGrath will add quality experience to the WBBL08 campaign, along with youthful options like Eleanor Larosa as they provide constant pace throughout the tournament.

Strikers coach Luke Williams took aim at the absence of Brown but reiterated her role for the bigger picture in his squad. With her experience, professionalism and leadership off the field, she is expected to still be a valuable resource to the team during her recovery.

What the Injury Means for Brown’s Australia Comeback

Brown, who has taken a break from international cricket in anticipation of returning next year, is an absence for the entirety of the WBBL. And in any case, it would have been an opportunity for her to gain match fitness, show what she could do with ball in hand, and then put that pressure on selectors for future assignments.

Brown is confident of returning to competitive cricket when medically cleared, with the T20 Champions Trophy in India set for February 2027. For now, her priority is preparing for rehabilitation rather than returning to action straight away.

Both Brown and the Strikers will now be left with a nervous wait, as the young pace bowler attempts to come back from the injury.
